Hyderabad , July 25

THE Andhra Pradesh Government has given administrative approval for the Handri Niva Sujala Sravanti project.

This project aims to provide eight systems to lift about 14 TMCft of water from the Krishna river over a height of 194 metres.

The water will then be conveyed through a separate canal system across a 216-km stretch connecting the pump houses and irrigate 1.98 lakh acres in the districts of Kurnool and Ananthapur. It will also provide drinking water to about 10 lakh people in 144 villages. The project also aims to supplement the water stored in reservoirs to be formed at Krishnagiri, Pathikonda, Geodipalli, Gollapalli and Cherlapalli.

The State Government, based on reports submitted by the Chief Engineer, Hydrology, has approved Rs 1305 crore for the Handri Niva Sujala Sravanti project Phase I. The Government will carry out the project in a phased manner.

The Handri Niva project also envisages drawing 40 TMCft of surplus Krishna water from the foreshore of Srisailam reservoir.
