Letters Sobering thought
This is with reference to "Horrors that history can sober us with" (Business Line, July 26). In this context, it is good to hear that the Tamil Nadu Government lost no time in appointing a retired High Court Judge to enquire in depth into all aspects of the Kumbakonam school tragedy in which 90 lives were lost. It is learnt that the Commission will have the benefit of advice from experts in various disciplines in its onerous tasks, inter alia, of assessing the cause of the fire, the lapses of the school management and teachers especially in a crisis situation, deficiencies and failures in the regulatory mechanisms of government; and finally, to suggest remedial measures for preventing recurrence of such accidents in future. The Commission will be doing yeoman service if it diagnoses the disease and gives prescriptions which will eradicate the disease completely, especially in an area where children, the future of the country, is involved.
