Policy Logistics - Railways Cabinet nod for freight train services to Nepal Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 26 THE Union Cabinet on Monday gave its post-facto approval to the signing of the India-Nepal Rail Services Agreement that allows for introduction of freight train services to Birgunj in Nepal via Raxaul in Bihar. Nepal has developed a rail-cum-road Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Birganj and the Railways have provided rail connectivity to the facility. With direct rail connectivity to the Birganj ICD from Kolkata and Haldia ports in eastern India, the neighbouring country would benefit from reduced transit time. Exchange of goods would be possible between India and Nepal through the railways and smuggling would be curbed as diversion of Nepal-bound transit traffic to Indian cities would no longer be possible. At present, freight traffic to and from Nepal is moving by road from different ports of India.
