HDR and the Millennium Goals

The latest Human Development Report 2004 has highlighted the slow progress in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals that are to be achieved by 2015 by all nations.

The report says that 312 million persons in South Asia are undernourished and 32 million children do not go to school. Taking this into account, the report forecasts that South Asia (India being an important member) would be able to achieve the target of hunger-free population and primary education for all only after 2015 .

The message conveyed by the report to the South Asian nations is that the priorities must change and the focus must be on human capital formation. As the report rightly states, "people are the real wealth of nations".
