SSI Bengal mulling fund for small sector: Buddhadeb Our Bureau
Kolkata , July 27 THE West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, has said that his Government was considering establishing a special fund for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). "We acknowledge that the SME sector needs support from the Government to meet the challenge posed by the large-scale sector, which is gradually entering the areas once allocated to smaller enterprises," Mr Bhattacharjee said at the annual general meeting of the Federation of Small & Medium Industries (Fosmi). He, however, did not mention any figure nor a timeframe for establishing such a fund. With only the interim Budget proposals for 2003-04 placed before the House, the Chief Minister's statement raised hopes of a suitable provision in the final State Budget document. He also drew the special attention of the Planning Commission to six districts of the State, which require the facilities meant for a "backward" region. The Chief Minister urged the entrepreneurs to look at setting up a plastics products complex, with a cluster of small units, either in West Midnapore district or in any part of North Bengal district to access the large market of the neighbouring States.
