Infrastructure Perumbavur to have new shopping mall Our Bureau
Kochi , July 28 THE Minister for Local Administration, Mr Cherkalam Abdulla, will lay the foundation stone for the vegetable market-cum-shopping complex at Perumbavur on July 31. The Rs 3.7-crore project is proposed to be completed within one-and-a-half years. The project is the biggest-ever undertaken by the Perumbavur Municipality, according to Mr N.C. Mohanan, Municipal Chairman. It is being taken up with the Aid for Development of Small and Medium Towns and loan from Kerala Urban Development Finance Corporation. The complex will be spread over 70 cents of land out of 145 cents in possession of the municipality at the present market place. The occupants of shops in the present market building would be rehabilitated in the new building and the remaining shops would be auctioned. The market would function as a transit point for sale of fruits and vegetables arriving from northern parts of Kerala. It would improve the potential for finding a better market for locally produced fruits and vegetables. Though the project was unanimously approved at the municipal council meetings at the initial stages, there was some opposition at the final stage on the ground that the project would not be worth the effort, he said. Meanwhile, it has been pointed out that a modern cum shopping complex inaugurated in December last is yet to be fully functional. This is being attributed to the delay in power connection.
