Waiting for the bounty

A scene from Pallana in Alappuzha. Chaakara, formation of mud banks along the coast during monsoons, used to be a windfall for fishermen. This year, however, Chaakara was spotted late even as fishermen have recorded very poor catch. Adding to their woes is the scarcity of kerosene used as fuel in fishing boats. In the open market, kerosene costs Rs 26 per litre, driving fishermen to virtual penury.
