Telecommunications `BSNL fails to popularise Caller ID facility' Our Bureau
Coimbatore , July 30 WHILE private players boast about `freebies' and value-added offerings, the State-owned telecom service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has, even after 18 months of making an announcement about offering the Calling Line Identity Presentation (CLIP) service for free, failed to popularise the facility. "BSNL has not only failed miserably in popularising the Caller ID facility but is also imposing unfair conditions,'' alleges the Secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC), Mr K. Kathirmathiyon. Installation of this facility especially in Government offices, educational institutions, hospitals, police stations, railway stations, cinema theatres and other public places would help in nabbing anti-social elements, who make hoax/abnoxious/threatening calls. He said the recent call given by the State Government for installation of Caller ID phones in all public offices was enough to show the extent to which the offer had been popularised. He has also drawn the attention of BSNL Chairman to the unfair conditions such as production of purchase receipt of CLIP indicator and a requisition letter for availing the service. Arguing that such a stipulation was unwarranted, as the customer could have received the instrument as a gift, Mr Kathirmathiyon asked "why should BSNL wait for a request from the consumer or ask for the invoice when it is prepared to offer the service for free?'' According to him, some BSNL offices were asking the customers to go to a shop and `get' a bill without necessarily purchasing the instrument but by paying a token sum of Rs 20. "This is objectionable'', he said. He has suggested that BSNL should henceforth install instruments with in-built Caller ID facility.
