"THE Union Government would shortly bring out necessary policy changes to make `.in' domain more popular in the country," the Union Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, said here on Saturday.

After inaugurating the Satyam Cyber Space, he said, "most of the IT companies have been registering themselves under top level domains like .com and .net.

"When I visit Hyderabad next time, I hope to see more companies registered under the `.in' domain. Meanwhile, as a stop gap arrangement, mirror Web sites could be hosted under top level domain `.in' to overcome the limitations of contractual obligations of previously registered domain names."

Right now the country is witnessing the second big wave of IT in the name of BPO (business process outsourcing) and ITES (IT enabled service).

The Government is currently formulating the data protection laws, which will help this sector and the ITES alone, is expected to generate sizeable employment opportunities, he said.

Commenting on the software sector, Mr Maran said, "India has emerged as the second largest software exporter in the world. While last year, the sector registered a growth rate of 28 per cent to touch total revenues of $15.9 billion up from $12.4 billion during previous year, this is projected to grow to about $20 million by the end of this fiscal."
