More thrust to Karnataka contract labour Acts

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Aug 1

THE Karnataka Labour Minister, Mr Tanvir Sait, has said that existing Acts on contract employment will be a given a new thrust and vision to suit the need of the hour.

Contract employment has come to stay in a global market, and only ability and skill will work in such an environment.

However, it is essential to protect the interests of workers in such a situation, he said, adding that the existing Acts in this regard will be given new vision. Interests of owners will also be protected, he said.

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, Mr Sait said that companies have been asked to implement the Contract Labourers Act to protect the interests of workers.

Asked if there will be any move by the Government to introduce reservation in the private sector, Mr Sait said, "Suggestions are welcome in this regard. We will try to implement them if they are easily digestible."

He said that the Government is planning to introduce third batch in ITI courses in the State. At present, ITI courses have only two batches in a year.

The courses will be based on the German model of training-cum-production.

Products manufactured during the training period will be kept on display and for sale.

Programmes are being chalked out in this regard and will be implemented from the next year.

Pilot studies are being conducted on the problems of district-specific industries such as fisheries and cashew in Dakshina Kannada and plantation sector in Kodagu district. The Government will devise suitable solutions for their problems based on the studies.

He said that though common minimum wages were notified for plantation and cashew sectors in 2003, they were not implemented as the work is seasonal in these sectors.

The Indian Productivity Council has been asked to study this in the plantation sector and submit a report to the Government, he added.
