Mr Maran was delivering the convocation address at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) here on Saturday.

"As IT industry moves up the value-chain, it will need doctorates and highly trained manpower to execute high-value contracts," he said.

He said the long-term objective of the Ministry of Information Technology was to promote both IT-based general education and IT-based education.

He said the country would need 9.7 lakh professionals for IT export industry and 27.2 lakh professionals for IT-enabled services industry by 2012.

Besides, 10 lakh more IT professional would be required for captive use by 2012.

The Union Minister assured the Andhra Pradesh Government of all help in its plans to create a robust broadband network.

He was reacting to Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister's, appeal on the issue.

Dr Reddy said the network would not only help the industry grow but also give the people in towns and villages access to new technologies and communication facilities.
