Funds for Kerala waterways

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Water Resources Minister, Mr T.M. Jacob, has said that the State has made a request for Central assistance to develop its waterways.

The Minister, who returned here after a visit to New Delhi, said an initial assistance of Rs 94 crore had been sought for the purpose.

The State has 1,687 km of usable waterways, which, if developed imaginatively, could take up a significant portion of cargo and passenger movement over land.

The Centre has extended an assurance to act proactively on the State's demand to extend the National Waterway No. 3 from Hosdurg in the north to Kovalam in the south. Kerala has also demanded Rs 216 crore for protecting its coastal areas from sea erosion. The Centre had agreed to look into this sympathetically, Mr Jacob said.
