BJP calls for `hartal' in Thiruvananthapuram dist

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bharatiya Janata Party has given a call for a `hartal' in Thiruvananthapuram district on Tuesday to protest against what it described as the police outrage on its youth cadres at Kovalam near here on Monday.

Announcing this here, Mr K. Raman Pillai, General Secretary of the State unit of the BJP, said essential services such as hospitals and milk supply would be spared from the dawn-to-dusk hartal.

Earlier in the day, activists of Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the party, had conducted a demonstration in front of the historic Halcyon Palace, ownership of which was sought to be handed over by the State Government to a private hotelier.

The protests turned violent leading to a lathi-charge by the police and bursting of tear gas shells. The State-level office-bearers of the Yuva Morcha were among those who were injured in the action.
