Roadways Reprieve for private bus operators in Kerala Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Aug 3 THE State Government has agreed to give private bus operators 10 more days to remit their taxes for the month, which were to be paid by August 15. The State Government has also assured private bus owners that it would take legal steps to restrict the issue of route permits to buses. However, the Government rejected the bus operators' demand that concessional fares offered to students be revised. Student concessions will continue to be 75 per cent of the regular fares. The striking private bus operators had submitted a charter of demands, including a hike in bus fares and restrictions on the issue of new route permits. Addressing a press conference in the city on Monday evening, the State Transport Minister, Mr R. Balakrishna Pillai, said that a hike in bus fares was unavoidable given the fact that diesel prices have gone up by over 40 per cent following the recent price revisions by the oil companies. Talks to determine the quantum of the fare hike will begin on August 11 and the State Government will announce the new fares on September 1. Leaders of the private bus operators' organisations said they were calling off the strike as the Government has agreed, in principle, to a fare hike.
