THE Communications and IT Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, on Tuesday expressed confidence that the issue of hiking the foreign direct investment (FDI) cap in the telecom sector to 74 per cent from 49 per cent would be resolved soon after taking the views of the Left parties into consideration. "All their views will be considered and we will take a right decision. The decision will be taken by the Prime Minister," Mr Maran said in response to a specific query on opposition by the Left parties.
"We have announced it... we do not see a problem. Other countries have 100 per cent FDI. We are not doing anything wrong," he pointed out.
On the issue of merger of BSNL and MTNL, Mr Maran said, "we have not discussed it elaborately. We are not going in that direction at this moment."
The Minister said that internet charges were high and should fall. "We are in an unrealistic world of internet charges. BSNL and MTNL are installing equipment for ADSL and DSL lines and by December they will be launching broadband services in a big way. It will begin the downward trend in rates," he said.
