Human Resources `Convert India into a country of opportunities' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Aug. 4 WHAT will be the `oil' that will drive India's economy to prosperity and propel it into the top few developed nations in the 21st Century? It will be the Indian Mind. Making this assertion, the Director-General, Council of Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr R.A. Mashelkar, said the big challenge was to convert India, which according to him was a land of ideas, into a country of opportunities. Today, 6,00,000 software professionals, comprising less than one per cent of the country's population, contribute to 20 per cent of the total exports. All of them are in their twenties. By 2008, the exports will grow to 35 per cent. This is one example of how the Indian mind can fuel the country's economy and growth, he said. Dr Mashelkar, who was speaking at a Lead India 2020 organised "Industry-Institute" meeting, which was largely attended by young college students and entrepreneurs, said the Nasscom chief, Mr Kiran Karnik, had told him that more than 25,000 software professionals had returned to India in the last three years to make their own contribution. Citing this as a position trend from the flight of brains from India to the US, which he called the land of opportunities, Dr Mashelkar said: "It's not enough that Indians do well abroad, they should do well in this country. Only then will we see the big change and our movement to the top among the developed countries." Mindset change is another urgent need in the country. It is said that when you add up one Japanese plus one Japanese, the total is 11 Japanese. But in the case of India, the sum total is zero.
