SOUTH is the place to be in for plastic products manufacturers. There is an untapped potential compared to the North and the West that can be exploited, say industry representatives.
To push for growth, the manufacturers' associations in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala are getting together to organise IPLEX-05, seminar and exhibition, in association with Plastindia Foundation, the apex association for the industry.
Addressing a press conference here, the foundation President, Mr Mahesh Shah, said growth in plastics consumption had been directly related to growth in GDP. With increasing investments in the South, plastics industry thatcaters to a wide range of industries is bound to grow. The per capita consumption of plastics is set to increase to 5.6 kg by 2006 from the present 4.1 kg.
The North and the West consume about 65-70 per cent of the white goods manufactured here. The South consumes about 20 per cent and the East, the balance. But there is rapid growth in the South and this will stimulate the industry, he said.
Dr Sushil K. Verma, Chairman, IPLEX-05, said that the industry needed to invest in technology to take on global competition. Conventional materials such as wood and metal were being substituted with plastics in industries. Plastics consumption in India was just a fraction of the world average of 18-20 kg per capita.
The exhibition is to be held during February 25-28, 2005, at the Chennai Trade Centre.
