Central nod sought for Hyderabad international airport

Hyderabad , Aug. 5

THE State Government will hold parleys with Central Government officials and the International Airports Authority of India (IAAI) in Delhi shortly to seek their nod for the airport project concessionaire and to pave the way to expedite the greenfield Hyderabad International airport project, which was awarded to the GMR-Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad consortium.

The State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy, accompanied by senior officials is slated to visit Delhi and hold parleys with officials shortly. The Government is keen to expedite the work on the project, according to Government sources.

Late last year, a shareholders agreement and the State support pact were inked between the GMR - Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad consortium, Airports Authority of India and the Andhra Pradesh Government, for the Rs 1200 crore greenfield project.

The State Government handed over the development of the project to the Indo-Malaysian consortium consisting of GMR Infrastructure Ltd and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad through an international competitive bidding process. Following this, a joint venture company - Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, was incorporated.

The erstwhile Government had set a tight deadline and as per plans the project was slated to be completed by 2006. However, the first phase of the project would be completed by September 2007 and will have capacity to handle 5 million passengers and 100,000 tonnes of cargo.

The State Government has acquired 5,000 acres for the project and the necessary clearances from AP Pollution Control Board and the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The airport, apart from being able to handle huge bodied aircraft, will have a cargo hub with logistics, storage and handling capabilities.

The airport will also host a duty free shopping mall, forex bureaus and retail activities. It is proposed to develop the area around the airport as a self-contained city with hotels, business centres and food courts.

The agreement provides for 74 per cent equity contribution from GMR-MAHB consortium and 13 per cent each from Airports Authority of India and the Andhra Pradesh Government.
