4 hurt in blast in ship

Our Bureau

VIJAYAWADA: Four persons were injured on Friday when a detonator exploded in a ship at West Quay-4 berth in Visakhaptnam port while loading thermal coal into MV Gem of Haldia.

The accident occurred when Mr Appa Rao, a work supervisor engaged by the South India Limited, a cargo handling agent, was fidgeting with a detonator in the deck of Gem of Haldia. The ship arrived from Chennai on Thursday for taking thermal coal for the Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board.

The detonator reportedly caught fire when the supervisor connected its wire to one of the batteries offered to him from a radio by a colleague. The injured were admitted to a local private hospital.
