The Hindu Business Line : TI opens design facility in Bangalore — Focus on smarter, cheaper mobiles with single chip

SEMICONDUCTOR leader Texas Instruments is focussed on the entertainment and mobile communications space with its single-chip solution, due to be launched by the end of the year.

There will be a dramatic reduction in cost and an increase in the functionality in mobile handsets, Mr Rich Templeton, President and CEO, said here today. He was inaugurating the TI India's new development and design facility on a 7-acre campus in Bangalore.

The Indian market is rapidly growing for TI for both wireless and broadband solutions although the mobile and wireless market are likely to be dominant at first, Mr Templeton said.

Not only will a single chip mean the phones can be smaller, they will also consume less power, can offer more to the smart phone segment, according to Mr Templeton.

TI is focussed on wireless and broadband communications for the near future, Mr Templeton said.

He added that with increasing amounts of content going digital and convergence of systems, TI was saw a major opportunity there as well. India has a large GSM and CDMA network and the subscriber base is growing rapidly, he said.

With an over 1,000-strong design and development team in Bangalore, TI is focussed on developing a number of the latest technologies on its roadmap from the country.

According to Dr Biswadeep Mitra, the Indian facility has groups working on products and libraries on TI's 90 nanometre technology and has component-level teams on the company's 65 nanometre technology as well. TI India has competency in both the silicon and software spaces and that will be crucial to developing new technologies, Mr Mitra said.
