IN its endeavour at making small and medium enterprises (SMEs) competitive, CII (Southern Region) has fixed for itself a seven-point agenda. Based on the agenda, it has built the theme for 2004-05 as the year `to grow competitive and move to compete.'
Briefing presspersons, the Chairperson of the Southern Regional Council, Ms Shobana Kamineni, said the SMEs competitiveness would be through clusters. "We are focusing on making SMEs internally competitive through handholding on manufacturing excellence, total cost management and energy management".
"CII's cluster is a mentoring service for the manufacturing units located in this belt," said Mr N. Krishna Samaraj, Chairman, CII Coimbatore Zone. He further said the mentoring work has just started.
On how they proposed to take it forward, he said the units would be located in one place, say, an industrial estate or would be vendors to manufacturing giants. Replicating the Ambattur cluster model, more clusters were planned at Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Bangalore, he said.
According to him, locating/relocating the units in one place - geographical cluster approach - would be over by January next, while the vertical cluster (vendors to major players) work would be taken up as and when the units are ready.
