NITK Surathkal to set up yogic centre

THE National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) at Surathkal near Mangalore will set up a yogic research centre on its premises.
Apart from training students and faculty in yoga, meditation and personality development, the proposed `Centre for Yogic Research, Holistic Health and Continuing Education', in association with some of the medical institutions in the region, will study the impact of yogic therapy.
In this regard, NITK is working out arrangements with Kasturba Medical College, Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Ayurveda College, and Fr Muller's College of Homeopathy.
According to the NITK Director, Prof S.S. Murthy, the yogic research centre will also conduct biomedical experiments on the impact of yoga on human beings, especially under coastal ambience.
It will study the use of herbal and medicinal plants and conduct research on their processing for commercial exploitation. Cultivation of medicinal plants is also on the cards to explore their commercial potential.
The Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Mr Oscar Fernandes, who laid the foundation stone for the centre at Surathkal on Friday, donated Rs 10 lakh from the M.P.'s Local Area Development scheme for the centre's construction.
