Our Bureau

Kolkata , Aug. 7

SPL Ltd, manufacturers of the Somany brand of ceramic floor and wall tiles, is working on plans for a manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh.

The company is open to the idea of either acquiring an existing facility or setting up a greenfield project at an estimated investment of Rs 15 crore-Rs 25 crore, according to Mr Anil K. Beejawat, President (Marketing), SPL.

Addressing a news conference here on Saturday, Mr Beejawat said that South India was among the fastest growing markets for wall and floor tiles. For facilitation in terms of logistics, it was imperative for the company to have a plant in South India. Details in this regard were being worked out, he said, and added that the proposed project was expected to go on stream within two years.

Mr Beejawat was here in connection with an exhibition-cum-roadshow where 250 new futuristic tile concepts and solutions were exhibited.

Currently, SPL has two plants in Haryana and Gujarat. These plants together have the capacity to manufacture 13 million square metres of wall and floor tiles annually.

The company has an 18 per cent share in the market for wall tiles. In the floor tiles segment, its share has been pegged at 13 per cent. The domestic market for wall and floor tiles has been growing at nearly 15 per cent per annum, thanks to the boom in the construction and housing sectors.

For SPL, the concepts and larger format tiles segment is a major focus area, Mr Beejawat said. The company recorded a turnover of Rs 215 crore in the year ended March 31, 2004, up from Rs 178 crore the previous year. The target for the current fiscal has been pegged at Rs 270 crore.
