Power `First pour of concrete' for fast breeder reactor by month-end M. Ramesh
Chennai , Aug. 8 THE `first pour of concrete' for the main building of the 500 MW prototype fast breeder reactor is expected to happen by the end of this month. "A VVIP" has been invited and a date from his office is awaited, Mr S.K. Jain, Chairman and Managing Director, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), told Business Line. The `first pour of concrete' is a reference-milestone in the implementation of a nuclear power plant. It is a sort of a `zero date' from which the progress of the project is measured. Mr Jain said that the 540 MW Tarapur-3 unit would go on stream by the end of this year, a year ahead of schedule. NPCIL has a five per cent stake in Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd (BHAVINI Ltd), the company that has been set up to build the Rs 3,492 crore, 500 MW unit and will provide the expertise for project management to enable timely construction and commissioning of the project. He said that there had been no upward revision in the estimated project outlay as of now, because of the rising steel prices. He said that perhaps after the detailed design of the project is drawn, the project cost may be revised. Commenting on the impact of steel prices on the other eight ongoing projects, Mr Jain said while price hikes have to be absorbed by the contractors, "we cannot be insensitive to their problems." He said that NPCIL would try to absorb a part of the cost escalation without having to go to the Government for funds. Answering a question, Mr Jain said that the 540 MW Tarapur 3 unit project, 88 per cent complete as of June, will go on stream by the end of 2004, nearly a year ahead of schedule. The `first pour of concrete' for the project happened in March 2000. NPCIL-owned installed capacity would go up to 6,800 MW by December 2008, from 2,720 MW now, Mr Jain said.
