Our Correspondent

MADURAI: Biomass gasifier plants to generate electricity will be started in four villages by the District Development Agency in Ramanthapuram district to bring down the expenses on electricity by village Panchayats.

According to the District Development Agency Project Officer, Mr K. Rajamani, the initiative is to help reduce the electricity expenses of village administrations by more than half.

Currently, each panchayat incurs, on an average, Rs 5,000 as charges. Karuvela tree, available in plenty in the region, and other wooden pieces are to be used as raw materials.

He said Pampoor, Kiliyoor, Nelmadoor and Pandiyur have been identified and the project is being implemented with a 50 per cent subsidy from the Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Resources and the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency.

The technical knowhow is being provided by the Baroda-based Ankur Scientific Energy Company.
