Agricultural Institutions `Watershed works of Nabard progressing well' Our Correspondent
Madurai , Aug. 8 WATERSHED development works in over 300 projects in seven States, including Tamil Nadu, implemented by Nabard in water-deficient areas, are progressing well, according to the Nabard Executive Director, Mr Amaresh Kumar. Speaking to newspersons at Tiruchi recently, he said that the projects were launched under Watershed Development Fund during 1999-2000 for 77 districts in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka. The programme was launched with a corpus of Rs 200 crore, shared equally the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Nabard. In Tamil Nadu, 27 projects are under implementation in Dindigul, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Vellore districts. Implemented in association with the Government, NGOs, banks and the local community, 125 projects have completed the first stage of capacity building and more than 50 are in the phase of full implementation. During the current year, it has been planned to add 200 more projects in 10 States including Rajasthan, Orissa and Jharkhand. It has been targeted to have 1,000 projects covering 10 lakh hectares with a funding of Rs 400 crore, he added.
