DHL to expand express, logistics services in India

Santanu Sanyal

Kolkata , Aug. 10

DHL proposes to upgrade facilities as part of its strategy to promote express business in India. It has already set up a huge gateway, covering 25,000 sq metres of space, in Delhi airport's cargo terminal.

There is a proposal to develop similar facilities at Mumbai and Bangalore airports at the earliest and at Chennai airport at a later date. Right now, the facilities at all the three places are outside the respective airport areas. The express business accounts for nearly half of the company's total business in this country.

"We are working with Airport Authority of India to develop the new facilities", a company spokesman told Business Line.

"Given a choice we would like to have new facilities in place at Mumbai and Bangalore in the current year itself but the problem is that hardly any space is available in Mumbai," the spokesman observed, indicating that the proposed expansion in Mumbai airport therefore might have to be vertical.

DHL is also mulling stepping up the number of weekly freighters out of India. Right now only one weekly freighter is operated out of Delhi.

The second weekly freighter, if introduced, will most probably fly out of Mumbai.

From an express company, according to the spokesman, DHL would like to emerge as total logistics service provider also covering warehousing, inventory management and inventory ownership, among other things. Fortunately, as he pointed out, more Indian companies are keen to avail themselves of the logistics services current being offered by DHL.

For example, DHL will soon a run a logistics centre in Delhi for an international computer company.

Meanwhile, DHL Danzas Air & Ocean, the global air and ocean freight provider and logistics arm of DHL, has appointed Mr Thomas Tieber as South Asia Vice-President. In his new role, Mr Tieber will oversee the company's joint venture in India - DHL Danzas Lemuir, which employs over 350 people at 15 locations in major cities.

Mr Tieber will also be responsible for the company's various agent operations in Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Laos.
