Karnataka transport strike impacts industry

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Aug. 10

MANUFACTURING and service sectors in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts were affected on Tuesday following a strike call given by the private bus owners in the State.

Private buses dominate nearly 90 per cent of mofussil and city bus routes in these districts, especially in Mangalore, Bantwal, Udupi, Kundapur and Karkal taluks.

Most of the industrial units in Mangalore are situated on the outskirts of the city at Baikampady and city buses are the major mode of transportation. According to an estimate, the industry has suffered a loss to the tune of more than Rs 2 crore following the strike.

Mr K. Jayaraj Pai, President of the Kanara Small Industries Association, told Business Line that nearly 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the workers were absent in various industrial units in Mangalore.

The President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr R.D. Kini, said that there are more than 13,000 industrial units in Dakshina Kannada district. More than one lakh people are working in various industrial units and the products will have to be delivered in a specified time limit. Closure of a day's work will affect these units, he said. Added to this, those working in these units will also lose a day's wages.

According to Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, Proprietor of Achal Cashew Industries at Baikampady, such strikes will lead to wage loss, which is more serious than loss in manufacturing sector. Mr Prabhu said that cashew-manufacturing units in urban areas were partially affected due to the strike.

Referring to the woes of private bus owners, he said that though Dakshina Kannada district has one of the best-operated bus transport system in the country, bus owners here are paying nearly Rs 4 more on a litre of fuel compared to other States. The Government should address the problems of the private bus operators, he added.
