Trade & Labour Unions Private bus strike total in Karnataka Our Bureau
Mangalore , Aug. 10 NEARLY 7,500 private buses stayed off the road in Karnataka on Tuesday following a strike call given by the Karnataka State Bus Owners' Federation to highlight the problems faced by the bus transport industry in the State. According to an estimate, the private bus industry suffered a loss to the tune of Rs 3 crore due to strike. The President of the Karnataka State Bus Owners' Federation, Mr K. Ravivarma Ballal, told Business Line that the strike was total in the State and no private bus was operated. It may be mentioned here that private buses run on a majority of routes in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shimoga, Chitradurga, Tumkur, Mandya, Bangalore Rural, Mysore, Kodagu and Bellary districts. The federation had called for a strike seeking a level-playing field with the state road transport corporation in various aspects. Mr Ballal said that though the price of diesel has been increased several times, there is no corresponding increase in bus fares. The reluctance of the authorities to increase bus fares has affected the private bus industry. The Government should fix the fare structure for private buses in the State rather than the regional transport authorities, he added. The President of the Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators' Association, Mr P. Bhaskar Salian, said that the strike was total in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts 1,400 private buses ply every day.
