Tirumala mandapam restoration

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to restore the ancient 1,000-pillar mandapam at Tirumala Hills, Tirupati. The Government has directed the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to take up the restoration work immediately.

The TTD was also asked to not take up the construction of a `maha prakaram.' The Government's decision followed Chinna Jeeyar Swami's reported move to launch fast unto death demanding that the mandapam be restored on the original site. Jeeyar had been opposing the previous Government's plan to erect a `maha prakaram,' dismantling ancient structures. There were apprehensions that Jeeyar's protest might set off agitations by his followers.

Following a direction from the Chief Minister, the Endowments Minister, Mr M. Satyanarayana Rao, spoke to Jeeyar on Monday to sort out the issue. Later in the evening, a memo signed by Mr J. P. Murthy, Principal Secretary (Revenue Department), was released, directing the TTD to restore the mandapam and not to go ahead with the prakaram works.
