Trade & Labour Unions Cochin Port staff threaten agitation V. Sajeev Kumar
Kochi , Aug. 11 THE Cochin Port Staff Association, major trade union in the port, has threatened to go on an indefinite agitation from September in protest against the undue delay in the clearance for the international container transhipment terminal project at Vallarpadam by the Union Shipping Ministry. The Working President of the Association, Mr P.M. Mohammed Haneef, told Business Line that the file of the Vallarpadam project, which has been cleared by the Shipping Secretary in June last, is pending with the Shipping Minister since last four weeks. Dubai Port Authority, the bidder of the project, is awaiting clearance from the Minister in this regard after submitting the tender to the port couple of months ago. The tender period will expire on October 20 and after that, the whole process had to be repeated which would ultimately result in indefinite delay for the materialisation of the project, he said. According to Mr Haneef, the general body meeting of the CPSA scheduled on August 13 would finalise the strike agenda and the Association is also organising a meeting of all interested parties including people representatives from the State to discuss the issue. Even though the Port Trust Board had taken decisions for the purchase of essential container handling equipments, he said this has not materialised on the guise that the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal would be transferred to the private party as part of the conditions to develop the project.
