Rice scheme to be expanded in Kerala

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Minister for Civil Supplies, Mr G. Karthikeyan, has said that the Antyodaya Anna Yojna would be expanded to cover an additional 1.14 lakh beneficiaries.

An official spokesman quoted the Minister as saying that currently the scheme covers 3.5 lakh people.

The Antyodaya Anna Yojna is a Centrally-sponsored scheme that seeks to provide those below the poverty line a monthly supply of 35 kg of rice at Rs 3 a kg. The Centre has estimated that there are 15.51 lakh families categorised as below the poverty line in the State.

The plan is to add another 1.14 lakh people to the rolls, making the aggregate number of beneficiaries to 4.71 lakh in the State, the Minister said. With this, Kerala would become the only State to implement the scheme in its entirety, the Minister said.

The new list of beneficiaries would be identified through the auspices of the local bodies. The targeted number would be identified within the next one-month period and Antyodaya cards handed over to them, the Minister added.
