Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 12

THE Sagarmala project for the integrated development of the maritime sector in the country has been renamed National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP) on the lines of the National Highway Development Project (NHDP).

The Sagarmala project was announced by the former Prime Minister, Mr A.B. Vajpayee, on August 14, 2003 involving rapid capacity expansion and modernisation of ports along the east and west coasts as well as development of inland navigation.

The Shipping Minister, Mr T.R. Baalu, called for a meeting of the Chairmen of all the major ports on Wednesday to know the investment plans of each of the 12 major ports for the next 10 years, Ministry sources said.

"The NMDP will shortly be put up to the Cabinet for approval," they added.
