Maharashtra Cabinet defers decision on easing ryots' debt burden

Mahesh Vijapurkar

Mumbai , Aug. 12

A DECISION on helping farmers to bear their debt burdens with some ease has been deferred by the Sushilkumar Shinde Cabinet on Thursday ``because it needs to examine all implications carefully.''

The subject did come up at the Cabinet sitting today where a host of other issues were dealt with but when it came to the issue of interest waiver to farmers, got stuck in details.

A source said, the Government does not want to get into a situation similar to the one it did by announcing free electricity to all farmers — without discriminating between the rich and the poor, those who can and cannot afford to pay electricity charges — and ``wants to be careful.''

When asked about how imminent it was, the Chief Minister, Mr Shinde, said, ``we will let you know the moment we decide.''

But on the issue of free power to all farmers, he appealed to the richer ones ``to come forward to pay the bills from the Electricity Board. He did not say if the bills would be issued to them.

Though the Cabinet papers for free power was moved by Nationalist Congress Party's Mr Jaydutt Kshirsagar, Minister for Energy, the party's supreme, Mr Sharad Pawar, has differed and said rich farmers needed no such support.
