Canon earmarks Rs 20 cr to promote imaging products

Moumita Bakshi

New Delhi , Aug. 13

CANON India today said that it would invest Rs 20 crore this year towards brand building, advertising and marketing activities of its consumer imaging business.

"We have already invested Rs 10 crore in the first half of this year and will invest another Rs 10 crore in the second half of the calendar year in brand-building, consumer outdoor roadshows and programmes for dealers," Mr Alok Bharadwaj, Director and General Manager (Consumer Imaging and Volume Products), told Business Line.

The consumer imaging operations targeted at consumers and small-office-home-office include products like low-end copiers, printers, laser printers, LCD projectors, scanners, digital cameras and other consumables such as cartridges and special inkjet papers.

"The investment would go into promotion of digital cameras, photoprinting and home cinema concepts and laser printers," he added.

Revenues from the consumer imaging operations stood at Rs 64 crore in 2003 and are expected to grow to Rs 100 crore this year, Mr Bharadwaj said.

"By the year 2007 we expect Canon India's revenues to grow to Rs 700 crore, of which Rs 350 crore would come from consumer imaging."

The future growth drivers for the sector include digital cameras, home cinema and printers.

"We launched digital cameras mid-last year and the product line clocked revenues of Rs 3 crore," he said, adding that digital cameras were expected to clock Rs 10 crore this year and account for a third of the projected revenues by 2007.

"In the home cinema space, we are promoting the projector as a replacement for the television, which too can be connected to a TV tuner and cable. This offers enhanced benefits as it can be used with devices like the digital camera, camcorder, DVD players or laptop. Besides this, it also offers other benefits such as an improved quality and flexi-screen," he said.

The LCD projectors would contribute about 10 per cent to the consumer imaging business by 2007.

"The printer business clocked Rs 32 crore and was the biggest contributor in 2003. The segment is expected to notch revenues of Rs 40 crore this year and account for a third of the business by 2007."
