FOR PILGRIMS' PROGRESS: A flyover under construction in Vijayawada, which will be ready in a fortnight for the Krishna Pushkaram festival. _ Ch. Vijaya Bhaskar

Vijayawada , Aug.13

WITH less than a fortnight to go for the Krishna Pushkaram fete, observed once in 12 years, the officials here are working hard to complete the works to provide facilities to lakhs of pilgrims.

However, the works at the bathing ghats have slowed down a bit due to flash floods in the Krishna.

Mr Mohan Kanda, the Chief Secretary, visited the sites earlier this week and reviewed the progress. He urged the Krishna district Collector, Mr K. Prabhakara Reddy, and other officials to expedite the works.

Mr Reddy said works had been taken up at a cost of Rs 90 crore in the district. He said all sanitary arrangements would be made at the ghats.

They could also visit the temples in the Krishna and Guntur districts. He said the APSRTC was running special buses and the railways special trains to bring the pilgrims from all parts of the State.

A new flyover was under construction in the town at a cost of Rs 12 crore to facilitate free flow of traffic. "This is the major permanent work taken up on the occasion of Krishna Pushkaram," he said.

The century-old Victoria Museum, housing rare historical artefacts and antiques, was also being spruced up for the occasion. The new Krishnaveni statue was being readied for installation, he said.

The famous Kanakadurga temple and other temples in the district were being given a face-lift, the Collector added.
