Bengal mulls special zone for bearing units

Kolkata , Aug. 15

THE West Bengal Government is considering a scheme to set up a special zone for the bearing industry.

Reacting to a proposal by the Eastern India Ball Bearing Merchants Association at its AGM here, the State Finance Minister, Mr Asim Dasgupta, said, "The proposal has its merits. We will discuss the issue of setting up a special zone near Kolkata as soon as possible."

The Finance Minister assured that the Government would take steps to reduce the harassment of traders related to the assessment of sales tax, especially regarding inter-State trade.

"The State-level value added tax (VAT) which is scheduled to be implemented in April 2005, will resolve many of the problems related to assessment," he said, adding, "assessees are eligible to do self assessment of tax under VAT".

On the investment scenario, Mr Dasgupta said investments in the State had gone up from Rs 500 crore to Rs 2,000 crore per annum during the last five years. Since 1995, 795 units had been set up in the Sate at a combined investment of Rs 24,500 crore.
