Ornamental fish rearing project for Lakshadweep

Our Bureau

Kochi , Aug. 16

A PROJECT to rear ornamental fish is slated to come up in Lakshadweep islands during the course of this year. This project, which would be the first of its kind in the country, would be mainly targeted at the export market, the Union Minister for Power, Mr P.M. Sayeed.

Efforts are already under way in terms of support for investments, transportation and marketing, which will complement the skill of the artisans, including the entrepreneurs.

The priority for the islands should be in the promotion of agriculture and allied sectors, by enhancing productivity. The Minister identified coconut cultivation and fishery as the two main agricultural sectors and efforts would be made for high value agriculture with an additional investment of Rs 2 crore, a press release issued here said.

Various measures will be envisaged to promote the harvest of marine resources from the Lakshdweep waters. The four-lakh sq. km. stretch of Lakshadweep waters is rich in marine resources. Modern technology needs to be applied to enhance the productivity of the marine fisheries.
