EDS plans to employ 5,000 by 2005-end

`India is a strategic hub in the network of our bestshore centres'.

New Delhi , Aug. 16

EDS is planning to increase its India headcount to about 5,000 professionals by the end of 2005 from the existing 2,000 staff in application solutions and BPO space.

"We currently have 2,000 professionals in the country of which 1,400 are in the application solutions segment and the rest in the BPO space. By the end of this calendar year this number will grow to about 2,600. We expect that by 2005-end, our India strength would grow to 5,000," Mr David M. Clementz, Executive Vice-President (Service Delivery), told Business Line.

On the ramp-up plans, he said that EDS plans to have up to 4,000 professionals in the application solutions space and over 1,000 in the BPO space by the end of next year.

Most of the growth would come from the accounts that are already in the pipeline.

"India is one of the offshore capabilities for the company. We have 21 such facilities and we see all locations from the point of view of growth. Overall, we are looking at growing from 14,000 people in our bestshore (outside US) facilities to 20,000 people by the end of 2005."

Terming India as a strategic hub in the network of its bestshore centres, he said: "The idea is to have pockets of excellence for global client base."

Admitting that India offered a clear advantage in cost structure, he said: "The real issue is the value from technology in terms of the level of excellence and certification that India has to offer. I believe that the practices here can be leveraged to other parts of our global network."

Asked if the company was eyeing new locations for expanding capacity, Mr Abhay Gupte, Managing Director of EDS India, said that the company was not looking at new cities but new facilities to grow the capacity.

EDS India, which was set up in 1996 as a wholly owned subsidiary of EDS Corporation, has three facilities at Chennai and one each in Gurgaon, Mumbai and Pune to support clients in the areas of application services, infrastructure technology outsourcing and shared services.
