A high-level review committee is studying the tourism policy of the previous TDP Government.

Hyderabad , Aug. 17

THE State Government has put the tourism policy of the erstwhile Telugu Desam Government under the scanner.

"A high-level review committee is currently studying the State tourism policy. Once the panel completes its job, we will come out with a new policy," said Ms J. Geeta Reddy, Minister for Tourism and Sugar.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, she clarified that the approach would not be vindictive. "We will just be reviewing the policy as every Government would like to have a policy of its own," she said.

Moreover, they had prepared a policy in 1998. Anyhow, it needed to be reviewed to incorporate the present day needs of the industry, Ms Geeta Reddy said.

The new policy is likely to give a thrust on rural tourism. "We will keep in mind the Chief Minister's view in this regard. A thrust on rural tourism would help us generate thousands of jobs," she said.

With regard to the controversy on the Prasads IMAX multiplex, the Minister said the proposed House Panel was yet to start its work.

The Minister said the State lacked good marketing strategies that proved to be a major hurdle in promoting the tourism potential.

As part of this initiative, the Tourism Ministry would launch a major campaign titled `Learn AP.' This campaign will bring 500 students from across the continent next month. Cox and Kings, with whom the State signed a pact, is organising these students.

Referring to the increase of Sales Tax on ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel), Ms Geeta Reddy said the Government needed to tap several sources to fund its developmental schemes such as free power to farmers. Earlier, addressing the valedictory of a workshop on travel and culture writing, she said the State lacked skilled writers to throw light on its rich tourism and cultural heritage. The Minister said the Government would consider introducing a regular course on tourism writing.
