Paswan to discuss uniform MRP for drugs with States

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 17

AS part of the Government's initiative to work out a uniform maximum retail price for drugs, the Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, will meet State Finance and Health Ministers on Wednesday.

The meeting will discuss the implementation of a uniform sales tax and abolition or uniformity of taxes levied by local authorities to make the retail price of medicines uniform and certain by printing it as inclusive of all taxes. The participants will discuss the need to not only ensure the abundant availability and reasonable prices of medicines but also the good quality of the same.

Another important issue under discussion is the pricing of medicines. The 74 bulk drugs specified in the First Schedule of Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 1995 and the formulations based thereon are under price control and their prices are fixed/revised by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). The meeting will take up for discussion the wide difference between wholesale prices and retail prices of non-scheduled formulations.
