Chennai , Aug. 18 MAHARASHTRA is the richest State in India. It has the largest GDP, besides ranking the highest in per capita GDP. However, the picture is not so tidy in other States. Uttar Pradesh (with Uttaranchal), for instance, occupies the second place in terms of GDP. But in terms of per capita income, the State clocks in at number 11 among the 13 major States shown in the table. Punjab, on the other hand, occupies the 10th place in terms of GDP, mainly because of its small size. In terms of per capita income, however, it is number two. The picture is more balanced in the case of Bihar (including Jharkhand). Its GDP is second-lowest while per capita GDP is the lowest among all the major States. What makes the contrast between Punjab and Bihar particularly interesting is that the average household in rural Bihar had a `constant price' income of Rs 9,782 in 2001 compared with Rs 60,224 for households in rural Punjab. Since the average household in both rural Punjab and rural Bihar had six people, this means that per capita income in rural Punjab was higher than even the average household income in rural Bihar.
