Water Gundlakamma project gets green signal Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Aug. 18 THE State Government has accorded approval for the construction of the Rs 165.22-crore Gundlakamma Reservoir Project near Chinna Mallavaram in Prakasam district. It is expected to provide irrigation to 80,060 acres in 43 villages, covering six mandals. The project is also expected to provide drinking water to 23.56 lakh people in these villages, including Ongole, the district headquarters. The State Government has also permitted to execute works amounting to Rs 100 crore to provide irrigation to 28 acres during kharif 2004. According to a socio-economic survey conducted by ATC Ltd, 5,444.60 acres of land is due to be affected by the construction of the reservoir and that land is proposed for acquisition to dig up the right and left canals and the reservoir. The District Collector, Prakasam, will have special staff comprising one Special Deputy Collector, along with 34 support staff to oversee the construction of the project.
