TN match-box units to stop production

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Aug. 20

PRODUCTION of match-boxes and movement of match bundles are to be halted between August 26 and September 5.

According to a meeting of the Match Traders and Manufactures Association, held at Kovilpatti, near here recently, the step is to prevent a possible glut in the market. The association has taken a decision to increase the price by Rs 10 a bundle of 600 match-boxes.

Mr S. Balasubramanian, Association Secretary, has said the hike in the price is due to the increase in the prices of raw materials. The price of chlorate has gone up by Rs 1,250 a tonne and the cost of wax by Rs 6,000 a tonne. The price of phosphorous too has gone up, he pointed out.

The fear of excess production is attributed to the purchase of match-box manufacturing machines from Korea, China and Japan at a cost of Rs 2.50 crore each, by a few companies recently.
