Codissia asks truckers to call off strike

Coimbatore , Aug. 21

THE Coimbatore District Small Industries' Association (Codissia) has urged the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) to call off the truckers' strike and seek alternative methods to redress its grievances in view of the adverse impact the strike would have on the industries in the region.

It has sought the intervention of the Union Finance Ministry to end the impasse caused by the move to bring the road transport sector under the ambit of the 10 per cent service tax, which is being opposed by the AIMTC.

In a statement, Mr J. Balu, President, Codissia, expressed the fear that the strike would have serious impact on the engineering industry in Coimbatore region, which has to bring raw materials needed from distant places and has to transport the finished products to markets located across the country.
