Letters Age limit
The Committee on Civil Service Reforms has no doubt made some sincere efforts to make the civil service "honest, responsive, politically neutral and professionally sound". But, on some points, one feels a bit ill at ease. First, one feels a bit uncomfortable with the lowering of eligibility criteria regarding upper age limit from 30 to 24. The reason quoted here is to "mould young entrants into government". Many students passing out from college are in the 20-21 age group and do not have sufficient work experience. Hence, reducing the age criteria and keeping the same as 21-24 may make a person enter into the services without any prior experience. Even for the post of clerk or stenographer, employers today insist on experienced persons. Second, a person who is in the 26-30 age group is not so old that he or she cannot be called "young". Another important point is that that SC/ST and ex-servicemen candidates get a relaxation of five years; the OBCs up to three years. This means, according to the new scheme, a SC/ST and ex-serviceman candidate can appear for the examination till he is 29 years.
