FICCI tourism marketing meet from tomorrow

Richa Mishra

New Delhi , Aug. 23

UNLIKE other competing eco and adventure tourism destinations, India's USP would be to synergise the competencies of the crafts, culture and cuisine of villages en route to eco and rural tourism destinations. According to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), this synergy would not only help the tourism industry but also create rural entrepreneurship and economic growth.

"The partnership is essential today especially in view of the constraints on infrastructure availability," a FICCI official said. A study conducted by the chamber on development perspective of eco and rural tourism in India revealed that it had the highest employment and investment ratio. Every additional investment of Rs 10 crore has the potential to generate 47.5 jobs.

Further, every direct job created in tourism leads to a creation of 77 jobs in other related sectors of the industry, the study stated. Besides, the multiplier effect of tourism generates high revenue - capital ratio in the Indian context. It is estimated that every million additional visitors could translate into Rs 4,300 crore of revenue for the industry.

To give an impetus to the promotion of eco and rural tourism, FICCI is organising a two-day international tourism marketing conference on August 25 in the Capital, the official said.

Elaborating further on the conference, FICCI said, "the five North-Eastern States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura have been presented the status of `partner States' during this conference." The Minister of Tourism, Ms Renuka Choudhary, will inaugurate the event.
