Vizag pharma city to be ready next year

Visakhapatnam , Aug. 22

THE work on the pharma city at Parawada in Visakhapatnam district is going on briskly and the infrastructural facilities for the units to begin production may be ready by May 2005, according to Dr K. Suryamohana Rao, Managing Director, Ramky Pharma City (India) Ltd, executing the project.

In an interview here on Saturday, he said the apprehensions over the likely environmental impact of the project were unfounded. He said it was not correct to compare it with the bulk drug units at the Jeedimetla area in Hyderabad. "I do not think it is fair to compare Parawada with Jeedimetla. In the first place, the bulk drug units were set up first at Jeedimetla and only after 15-20 years the pollution control measures were put in place. Here, the control measures such as the common effluent treatment plant are being developed simultaneously with the industry,'' he said.

He said there would be no transport, or conveyance, of the effluents through trucks as in Jeedimetla. Effluents generated by each unit would be collected and conveyed to the CETP through a network of pipelines, he said. Therefore, there was no chance of spillage.

The treated effluents would be released into the sea through a marine outfall and a 15-km pipeline would be laid for the purpose. The disposal point had been designed in accordance with international standards, he said.

``The industry would contribute to the CETP and no industry would be given an individual outlet to dispose of the waste. There is also a facility for the storage of the untreated waste. In view of all these steps, there is no cause for any apprehension that Parawada would turn into another Jeedimetla,'' he said.

Earlier in the day, he addressed a press conference along with the Commercial Taxes Minister, Mr K. Ramakrishna.
