Concern over deadlock

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: The Peace Initiative Committee (PIC) has expressed concern over the deadlock in the talks between the Andhra Pradesh Government and the CPI (ML) (People's War).

The PIC, formed by a group of intellectuals, felt that the Government should not insist on the Naxalites shunning weapons. "In fact, the Government is holding talks with them because they are carrying arms. Instead of making it a precondition, the Government can make that issue part of the upcoming talks," the PIC members said.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, they wanted the Government to remove the seventh clause in the draft agreement. They criticised the Government for not setting up the Monitoring Committee to oversee the talks.
