Hyderabad , Aug. 23

THE Plastics Export Promotion Council is organising a national seminar on `Focus-CIS initiative' of the Union Commerce Ministry, here on August 25.

The seminar will also discuss the Council's Market Access Initiative (MAI) project for plastic consumer products in the US and related product liability and insurance.

The day-long meet would also deliberate on issues related to the `Digital signature facility' launched by the Director General Foreign Trade recently. Mr P.K. Mohapatra, Director in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, will make a presentation on the `Focus-CIS Programme', which aims to enhance trade with the CIS countries.

According to Mr Jaswanth Soundarapandian, Regional Director of the Council based in Chennai, exports of plastic from India has been growing rapidly over the last few years despite adverse market conditions, and has clocked $1.13 billion in 2003-04, a growth of 20 per cent over the previous year. "We are now in the process of charting out growth strategies to capitalise on the huge potential available for plastic products worldwide," he said in a press release.

As a first step, the Council has undertaken a project under the MAI scheme introduced by the Commerce Department to tap the potential available for plastic consumer products in the US. The seminar seeks to disseminate information to its members on the project.

Based on the findings of the market survey conducted in the US market, the next process of setting up warehouses and display centres in US is on, and the Council's proposed action plan will be presented during the seminar and inputs from members would be sought, according to the release.
